Abstract

930,337. Electric selective signalling systems. PARKINSON COWAN Ltd. April 11, 1962 [April 11, 1961], No. 13005/61. Class 40 (1). In a system for controlling six pumps according to a preset programme, leads T1-T48 correspond to successive steps in the programme and may be connected by plugs (shown by crosses) either to selected ones of leads 1P1- 1P6 to represent start commands for the respective pumps, or to lead 1PO to represent a special command whereby all pumps which are running at that time are stopped. Master clock 1 pulses magnet CSTM every half hour to scan leads T1-T48 in turn during a day, and at the end of this operation bank CST2 pulses magnet CSDM to step switch banks CSD1-CSD7 so as to select the next group of leads 2P1-2P7 corresponding to the next day, and so on, until on the last day of the week, leads 7P1-7P7 are selected, the contacts of each bank being connected to a corresponding lead in each group. Lamps LT1-LT48 and LD1-LD7 indicate which step of the programme is in progress. Control circuit 2 transmits the signals from CSD1-CSD7 to a remote station where three of the pumps are located in a well and three on the surface. An interlocking arrangement is provided to ensure that the pumps in the two sets are started in the correct order and the total output from the pumps in the well is balanced by that from the surface pumps. In the programme shown for the first day, step 1 starts pumps 2, 4, step 2 stops pumps 2, 4 and starts pumps 1, 5. Step 47 stops all pumps running in step 46 and starts pumps 2, 5. Step 48 replaces pumps 2, 5 by pumps 2, 4, but in this case a command decoder at the remote station senses that pump 2 is required again in step 48 and prevents this pump being stopped by the common stop signal. Signals indicating the operating state of the pumps are received from the remote station and are supplied to a minic diagram 31, and also to a comparator 7 for checking with the commands transmitted. If the programme pattern is repeated on following days, the corresponding groups of leads 2P1- 2P7 to 7P1-7P7 may be dispensed with, the appropriate switches R1-R7 associated with banks CSD1-CSD7 being closed instead.
