Abstract

1467805 Electrical control system STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 19 Sept 1974 [21 Sept 1973] 44378/73 Heading G4H An electrical control system comprises a central station connected over a single signal path to a number of controlled points, each point being allocated a time position in a repetitive cycle of time positions. A receiver (Fig. 2, not shown) at each point is responsive only to signals in its respective time position. Each signal is a 1 or 0 signal dependent on which of two conditions a controlled device at a point is to be set to, or in which of two possible directions a controlled device is to be influenced, the signals for a device continuing in the 1 or 0 state for as long as the command is to last; a command signal is only considered valid if it occurs at the same time position in at least two successive cycles. The central station (Fig. 1, not shown) may comprise multiplexers (M1, M2) controlled by counters (C1, C2); and each receiver may comprise a signal-detecting gates and flip-flops controlled by programmed counters (C1, C2). The system may comprise a common clock pulse generator for the transmitter and all the receivers, and pulses of opposite polarities may be used for the clock pulses and the command signals. Digital or sampled analog data may be sent back from each point to the central station; it may be sent back along the command signal path, when each device's time position consists of two portions, one for commands and one for data. The system may be installed in a vehicle, when the central station includes dashboard switches, the controlled devices include headlamps, heaters, &c., and the data includes fuel level, oil pressure, &c. The system may alternatively be installed in a building, when the signal wiring may be combined with a (ring- main) power supply conductor. It may also be used for continuously controlling apparatus such as a TV camera, when two time slots are used for each controlled function (azimuth, elevation, focus, &c.), one for each of its directions.
