Abstract
930,325. Making metal sheets; welding by pressure; shearing. TAYLOR-WINFIELD CORPORATION. July 24, 1959, No. 25430/59. Classes 83 (3) and 83 (4). Strip welding apparatus comprises two spaced clamps 11, 12, a shear assembly 15 mounted on a carriage 14 reciprocable transversely of the clamps, the shear assembly comprising upper and lower shear blades and guides beyond each end of the blades for guiding the blades during shearing of a pair of metal strips and the guides at one end of the blades being separable to enable the said guides to traverse the strip ends as the carriage is traversed, and means 16 for welding the sheared strip ends gripped in the clamps. A base 10 supports a pair of clamps 11, 12 along the oblique path 13 of travel of strip through the apparatus and a rectangular carriage 14 supporting the shearing assembly 15 and a roller electrode welding assembly 16 is movable in the base by a nut and drive shaft device 28, 29 from the position shown in Fig. 1 to the left and back again. The welding device comprises a transformer 33 connected to roller electrodes 39, the lower electrode being mounted on a pedestal 41 for vertical adjustment by a hand wheel and the upper electrode being connected to the piston of a fluid cylinder 43. The shearing assembly comprises upper and lower carriers 45, 46 for spaced pairs of blades 47, the carrier 45 being connected by linkage and bell-cranks to the piston of a fluid cylinder 57 and the carrier 46 being connected to the piston of a fluid cylinder 61. The carrier 46 is guided by rods 63 engaging holders 64 and a blocking plate 66 to take shearing shocks is movable beneath the rods 63 by a fluid cylinder 67. A pair of guide pins 70, 71 on the carrier 45 engage sockets 72, 73 on the carrier 46. The clamp 12 comprises a lower member 75 mounted on a pivoted platen 76 and carries at its ends a pair of fluid cylinders 79 whose piston-rods engage an upper member 81. The clamp is pivotable by a fluid cylinder 84. The clamp 11 is similar but is instead horizontally movable by a fluid cylinder. In operation with the carriage in the position shown in Fig. 1 and metal strip fed along path 13 from a coil, when the coil becomes exhausted the trailing end is clamped in clamp 12 and the leading end of a new strip is clamped in clamp 11. The lower shear carrier 46 is raised and locked and the upper carrier 45 is caused to descend and crop the strip ends, pins 70, 71 being guided in the sockets 72, 73. After shearing the carriers are returned, the clamp 12 is pivoted to raise its strip end and the clamp 11 is moved forward to overlap the strip ends. The carriage is then moved to the left in Fig. 1, the opened pin and socket 71, 73 allowing clearance of the cropped and overlapped strip ends, and the electrode rollers roll over and weld the overlapped ends, the welded seam being of less thickness than the overlapped ends.
