Abstract
959,829. Making strip; welding by pressure; shearing. -TAYLOR-WINFIELD CORPORATION. June 18, 1960, No. 21498/60. Headings B3A, B3R and B3W. Welding apparatus for joining the ends of workpieces comprises a pair of longitudinally spaced welding electrodes arranged in a series electrical circuit during welding and means to overlap the workpieces adjacent only one of the electrodes, the one electrode engaging the overlap of the workpieces and the other electrode engaging only one of the workpieces or a conductive member thereon. The apparatus comprises a housing 10, Figs. 1, 2, supporting a pair of rails 12 engaged by rollers 13 on a carriage 14 carrying a transformer and a pair of driven electrode rollers 16, 17 mounted for vertical movement by fluid cylinders. On the housing beneath the rollers are mounted a pivoted shear table 27 and a platen 28. A lower shear blade 30 is fixed one end of the platen and an upper blade 31 is on a carrier 32 connected to a table 27 to pivot the latter downwardly as the upper blade is lowered. A copper &c. welding platen 36 is mounted on the platen 28, a welding clamp 37 carrying a conductive plate 38 and gauge bar 39 is mounted between the rollers and a clamp 46, 47 is mounted for longitudinal movement by a cylinder 42 at the other end of the platen 28. In operation with the trailing end of strip passing through the welder as indicated by arrow 25, the trailing end is clamped by clamp 46, 47 and upper blade 31 is lowered to crop the strip. The clamp 46, 47 then moves the cropped end just behind the roller 17 and clamp 37 is lowered. The leading end of a new strip is advanced to abut the gauge 39 and overlap the cropped end, a clamp 40 and rollers 16, 17 are lowered, roller 17 engaging the overlap and roller 16 the plate 38 and current is supplied as the rollers are moved across the work. Current passes from one electrode through the work and platen 36 and to the other electrode. In a modification the movable clamp 46, 47 is omitted and the cropped end remains adjacent the shear. In a further modification the lower shear blade 30<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 8, is attached to a support 50, the platen 28<SP>1</SP> is movable by a cylinder 83 and the clamp 37<SP>1</SP> is interconnected and movable with the platen 28<SP>1</SP> to index the cropped trailing end. On another modification the roller 16<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 9, is employed for welding, the conductive plate 60 on the clamp 37<SP>1</SP> extending beneath the roller 17<SP>1</SP> and a pivoted gauge bar 61 for the leading end being disposed adjacent the roller 16<SP>1</SP>. The conductive plates on the welding clamps extending beneath the non-welding roller may be omitted.
