Abstract

In the separation of paraffin from hydrocarbon oils by urea adduct formation, the adduct is obtained in an easily separable, granular form by treating the oil with urea in the presence of a urea solvent and an oil solvent and controlling the concentration and proportion of the urea solution and the temperature of the mixture during or after adduct formation to obtain a granular adduct. Long lists of urea and oil solvents are specified, preferred being water or lower alcohols and chloro- or chloro-fluoro-hydrocarbons respectively. Upper and lower limits of temperature are given at various urea concentrations in water and proportions of urea solution for adduct formation with a spindle oil, kerosene, straight run gasoline and a reformed gasoline in the presence of methylene chloride as oil solvent. If conditions during adduct formation result in a pasty emulsion a granular form can be obtained by lowering the temperature or increasing the proportion of urea present, e.g. by adding solid urea; the temperature may be lowered by evaporating part of the oil solvent. If on the other hand a powdery adduct is formed, the temperature is raised or urea solvent is added. In a preferred embodiment the urea is added in two stages observing the conditions for granular adduct formation in each.
