Abstract

The invention comprises a -[5-nitrofuryl-(2)-methylidene]-alkanoyl-thiophenes in which the thiophene radical may be substituted by an alkyl group, fluorine, chlorine or bromine, a nitro group or a halogen-alkyl group, e.g. trifluoromethyl, and the alkanoyl radical may be straight or branched. Specific examples have the formula <FORM:0929450/IV(a)/1> where R is hydrogen, halogen or a C1 to C4 alkyl group. The compounds are prepared by reacting an alkanoyl-thiophene in which the alkanoyl radical in the a position contains two hydrogen atoms, with furfural which may or may not be nitrated, and further nitrating if necessary. Examples are given.ALSO:Disinfectants, medicines, foodstuffs and animal fodder, contain a -[5-nitrofuryl-(2)-methylidene]-alkanoyl-thiophenes in which the thiophene radical may be substituted by an alkyl group, fluorine, chlorine or bromine, a nitro group or a trifluoromethyl group. Examples of compounds have the formula <FORM:0929450/VI/1> where R is hydrogen, halogen or a C1 to C4 alkyl group and a solid or liquid carrier. The compounds possess anthelmintic, bacteriostatic and fungicidal action and may be used as general disinfectants, preservatives for foods and feedstuffs, and in human and veterinary medicine. Medicines may be for oral, parenteral or topical use, e.g. tablets, dragees, capsules, powders, ointments, solutions, suspensions and emulsions.
