Abstract

Vinyl chloride is prepared by thermally decomposing 1,2- or 1,1-dichloroethane in the vapour phase in the presence of crystalline carbon, i.e. graphite, preferably in the form of bars, preferably disposed lengthwise in the pyrolysis tube, adjacent bars being in lateral contact with each other. The temperature is preferably not higher than 600 DEG C. (advantageously about 450 DEG C. for pyrolysing 1,2-dichloroethane) and the pressure preferably not higher than 40 atmos.
