[Also in Groups XIX, XXXVIII, XXXIX and XL (c)] An inductance device variable by remote control comprises a core 1 of soft magnetic material carrying one or more coils 2 and a linked core member 3 of highly retentive magnetic material carrying a winding 4, pulses supplied to winding 4 affecting the magnetisation of core member 3 according to their number, amplitude and duration and so causing variation of the inductance of coil 2 or of the coupling between two coils on core 1. There may be an automatically operating device arranged to cut off the supply of pulses when the inductance of coil 2 reaches a maximum and so prevent reversal of the direction of magnetisation in core 3. Alternatively pulses may be applied to a winding arranged to produce transverse magnetisation in core 3. For remote control of a radio or t.v. receiver the pulse generator 13 (Fig. 3) produces positive and negative pulses according to which of photo-electric cells 14 or 15 is illuminated. Supply of pulses is stopped by feedback through conductor 22 when a given value of inductance of 17 is achieved. The apparatus may be used for counting pulses or for automatic control of the state of a device 20 (Fig. 4) recorded by a measuring instrument 21 which, on a given deviation, sends a control signal to pulse generator 19 inducing it to emit positive or negative pulses as appropriate. Instead of using positive and negative pulses the pulse supply may be switched to the appropriate one of two oppositely coiled windings on the core 3.
