Abstract

928,659. Resilient mountings for road vehicle spring suspensions. UNDER GEAR EQUIPMENT (R.B.P.) Ltd., RUBBER BONDERS Ltd., E. W. ORCHARD, and C. WHITTING- HAM. Sept. 29, 1961 [Sept. 22, 1960; Sept. 5, 1961], Nos. 32571/60 and 31843/61. Classes 108(2) and 108(3). A resilient suspension means for vehicles comprises a series of discs 13 of rubber or other elastomeric material which fit closely within a rigid metal tube 10, are compressed between rigid end members 11, 12 secured, e.g. by set screws 15, within the tube 10, and have their abutting faces correspondingly radially corrugated so as to fit snugly together, and a non- circular, e.g. squared, spindle 14 which extends through correspondingly-shaped holes in the discs 13 and has its ends projecting through circular bearing holes in the end members 11, 12 the tube 10 being adapted for mounting on the vehicle chassis 18 and one end 14c of the spindle 14 being adapted to receive, or being provided with, a crank arm extending radially from the spindle to support a vehicle wheel. The other threaded end 14a of the spindle 14 carries a nut 16 which is tightened on to the end plate 12 to compress the discs 13. After the plate 12 has been fastened by the set screws 15 the nut 16 can be loosened to avoid frictional contact with the plate 12 when the spindle 14 oscillates. The discs 13 may vary in hardness resilience being softer towards the centre of the series than the ends. A channel-section member 17, welded to the tube 10, is secured to the chassis member 18 by studs 19. The radially extending crank arm has its end remote from the tube 10 either fitted with a stub-shaft for carrying a non- driving wheel, or connected to the half-shaft casing of an associated driving wheel. As shown in Fig. 4 each half-shaft casing 25 carries a member 28 having its ends pivotally connected to crank arms 24 associated with a pair of suspension members 20. This arrangement may include snubbers.
