Abstract

928,564. Displacement measuring systems. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 4, 1961 [Aug. 9, 1960], No. 28400/61. Class 40 (1). Signals resulting from the passage of MoirÚ fringes over photo-cell 6 during movement of diffraction grating 1 are phase-modulated by vibrating reference grating 2 and the modulated and modulating signals are used to produce two waveforms differing in phase by 90 degrees to represent the extent and direction of movement of grating 1. The outputs of devices 10, 11 are proportional to sin #t and cos 2#t, where sin #t is the modulating signal, and the outputs at H, F derived from multiplicative detectors 12, 13 and filters 14, 15 are proportional to sin #x and cos #x, where # is proportional to the velocity of grating 1 and x is the displacement of grating 1. Waveforms differing in phase by 90 degrees may alternatively be produced by the gating circuit of Fig. 4 (not shown). Phase modulation may also be effected by vibrating a mirror which is used to superimpose an image of grating 1 on the grating in order to produce the MoirÚ fringes. The sense and extent of the displacement may be displayed on a cathode-ray tube or by means of a counter.
