1528740 Phase modulators NEWALL ENG CO Ltd 2 Sept 1975 [4 Sept 1974] 38576/74 Heading H3R In a phase modulator suitable for use in a measuring apparatus, sinusoidally varying voltages in quadrature are derived from a transducer or transducers (not shown) co-operating with a moving element e.g. an illuminated grating, and applied to a first and second four-quadrant multipliers 1, 2 in combination with a further set of quadrature signals and the multiplier outputs are added at 9 to provide a signal at 10 whose phase changes in accordance with the amplitude variation of the signal voltages at 3, 5. The output of each multiplier may be linearized by incorporating a negative feed-back loop (Fig. 2 not shown) including a phase sensitive rectifier responsive to the multiplier output and a corresponding one of the signals at 4, 6.
