874,088. Electric measuring systems. CANADIAN WESTINGHOUSE CO. Ltd. Jan. 28, 1958 [Feb. 22, 1957], No. 2826/58. Class 40 (1). In a system for measuring linear displacement utilizing a transducer consisting of oppositely energized input elements and an output element normally centrally located with respect to the input elements e.g. an E-type transformer, the sensitivity is increased, without errors due to phase distortion by using an L.F. modulated H.F. carrier energizing voltage. As shown (Fig. 2) the output from an H.F. oscillator 11 is modulated at a low frequency at 12 and the carrier suppressed to give two similar outputs A, B in which the carrier waves are 180 degrees out of phase. These signals are fed to the input elements of a transducer 13 whose output, consisting of a signal in phase with A or B depending on the direction of the displacement, is mixed with part of the output of oscillator 11 and fed to a detector 15 to produce a phase-sensitive L.F. signal indicative of the extent and direction of displacement.
