Abstract

928,549. Making diaphragm valves. GRINNELL CORPORATION. August 11, 1961 [August 19, 1960], No. 29116/61. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XXIX] A method of making a diaphragm valve body comprising depicting on a flat surface the developed shape of a transition piece, cutting the shape from the flat stock, wrapping it to form the transition piece and connecting it to at least one body part. A valve body of the low weir type comprises end pieces 10 to which are coaxially welded truncated cone transition pieces 20, a clamping plate 28 welded to the pieces 10 and to which is welded a weir piece 32. Fitted to the body is a diaphragm 38 clamped to the plate 28 by the lower end of a bonnet 44 which houses a control mechanism 48. The developed form of the transition piece may be determined by trial and error, drawing or by using a three dimensional model. In a modification, a high weir type of valve body, Fig. 9, may be similarly constructed. In a further modification, a no-weir valve body comprises two transition pieces 78 welded together at 88 and to a clamping plate 84. A raised seat of weld may be provided to assist the sealing efficiency of the valve. Alternatively, the body may consist of a single piece 106 suitably machined after welding to receive a clamping plate.
