Abstract

A method for removing CO2 and/or H2S from gas mixtures comprises countercurrently contacting the gas mixture introduced at 2 in an absorption column 1 with an aqueous alkaline solution, capable of absorbing said acid gases, at a pressure such that the partial pressure of the acid gas is at least 80 lbs./sq. in., withdrawing said scrubbing solution containing absorbed acid gas from the bottom of the absorber column by line 9 and reducing the pressure over said solution to about atmospheric pressure in the decompression tank 10, withdrawing the scrubbing solution by line 14 and dividing such that a first portion is conducted by lines 15 and 4 to an intermediate level of the absorber column, and the second portion is conducted by line 17 to regeneration column 18 for boiling and steam stripping to remove acid gas, and then recirculating said second portion from the bottom of column 18 to the top of the absorption column 1. The solution is withdrawn from the bottom of the absorption column 1 at a temperature of 180 DEG to 260 DEG F. The second portion of the solution from the decompression tank 10 comprises 10 to 40% of the total solution in circulation. A heat exchanger 28 may be used to cool the solution returning to the top of the absorption column. The <PICT:0928472/III/1> The alkaline solution may be an alkali metal carbonate or phosphate, e.g. potassium carbonate. The absorber column 1 and the regeneration column 18 may be packed with Raschig rings, or Berl saddles, or may employ bubble trays. Specification 725,000 is referred to.
