Abstract

Naphthaquinone is removed from an aqueous solution containing phthalic acid, maleic acid and naphthaquinone by treating the mixture with a solvent for the naphthaquinone, the solvent being immiscible with water and not a solvent for the phthalic or maleic acid and separating the solvent layer containing the bulk of the naphthaquinone. Examples of solvents are benzene, toluene, xylene, benzol, toluol, xylol and the associated halogenated p compounds, esters of benzoic acid, cycloparaffins, saturated and unsaturated halogenated hydrocarbons, propyl and butyl ethers and straight chain paraffins. Trichlorethylene is a preferred solvent. The treatment may be effected by countercurrent flow, e.g. in a packed tower, the solvent being fed to the top and the mixture to be treated being fed to the bottom. The solvent may be recovered from the naphthaquinone by evaporation under vacuum. Crude mixtures of phthalic and maleic anhydrides obtained by vapour phase oxidation of hydrocarbons as in Specification 800,783 may be hydrated, treated by the above method to remove naphthaquinone, cooled to crystallise the acids, followed by centrifuging or filtration and the solid acids heated to convert them to the anhydrides. The anhydrides may be separated and purified by distillation.
