[Also in Group XXIX] A machine of the die and plunger type for forming cartons from blanks, in which double side walls are folded over to enclose flaps on other walls to hold the carton erect, has the folding means 93 intermittently operated by the movement of the plunger. Blanks inserted into the machine along a platform 63, are pressed into a die 51 by a plunger 41 to bend up the sides of the carton at 90 degrees to the base. The plunger is driven downwards by a pneumatic motor 28 forcing sprung jaw members 83 back into recesses 61. At the bottom of the plunger downstroke the jaw members 83 spring back to grip the partially formed carton; the plunger 41, suitably grooved to avoid the jaw members 83, then withdraws. As the plunger 41 is withdrawn from the die 51 pivoted folding members 93 swing inwards to fold over the double side walls of the carton. The members 93 are turned, through chain and sprocket means, by a lever 100 which turns under the interaction of rollers 101 with a cam surface 102. The rollers 101 engage the surface 102 at the end of the withdrawal stroke and beginning of the downstroke only, consequently imparting an intermittent motion to the members 93. During the remainder of the motion the rollers 101 engage the sides of rods 22 on which the plunger assembly is mounted. The rods 22 slide in bearings 16, 17 and are driven by the motor 28 whose motion is controlled by limit valves 20, 37 in conjunction with a pneumatic relay valve (see Group XXIX). The die 51 is removable by releasing screws 55 and the plunger 41 by removing screws 40 to enable these to be replaced by members of different dimensions and thus enable cartons of different sizes to be dealt with.
