Abstract

928,308. Hydraulic shock absorbers. ARMSTRONG PATENTS CO. Ltd. March 15, 1962 [March 22, 1961], No. 10415/61. Class 108(3). In a telescopic hydraulic shock absorber eg. for connection between the frame and steering assembly of a vehicle and comprising a cylinder 10 and a piston 20 with a rod 22 which extends through a sealing gland 14 in one end of the cylinder 12 and in which flow of hydraulic medium is unidirectional in a continuous closed circuit through the pistons and cylinder and a reservoir 28, a valve seat 56 is arranged in a passage 52 formed in the sealing gland 14 to connect passages 48, 54 leading respectively to the cylinder and the reservoir spaces, a valve member 58, with a metering orifice 66 for through-flow of fluid, being resiliently urged by a spring 64 against the seating 56. The hydraulic and outer cylinders 10, 12 are located at their ends by the sealing gland 14 and a plug 16 which provides a mounting for a foot valve 30 having apertures 32, 34 which communicate respectively with the reservoir 28 and the space within the cylinder 10 and which are separated by a filter plate 36. The aperture 34 and apertures 42 in the piston 20 are normally closed by spring- loaded valve plates 40, 44 respectively. A cylindrical elastic diaphragm 24 separates the reservoir 28 from an air compartment 26. The force of the spring 64 is adjustable by a screw 68 which supports the end of the spring remote from the valve member 58.
