Abstract
364,308. Preventing canting. DEUTSCH, F. A., 27, Rankestrasse, Berlin. Dec. 15, 1930, No. 37826. [Classes 103 (vi), 108 (ii), and 108 (iii).] In a vehicle stabilizer the action of which is practically eliminated when the suspension springs deflect equally in the same direction two cylinder casings 1 are arranged, one at either side of the vehicle, in which pistons 2 work under displacement of liquid dependent upon the relative movements between the wheel axle and the vehicle frame such that when the deflections are equal and of the same kind the quantity of fluid which is displaced in each casing can flow through cross connections 3 to the opposite side of the piston in the other casing such that the quantity of fluid displaced in one casing is equal to the space set free to take up liquid in the other casing. The stabilizer may be connected, or combined, as shown in Fig. 5, with a shockabsorber. In one form, the radial vane pistons 2, Fig. 1, coacting with fixed abutments are connected through systems of levers and rods to the wheel axle. Elastic elements, e.g. air, rubber or helical springs coacting with pistons 4, may be provided in the pipe lines 3. In order to prevent the stabilizer from functioning when say one wheel is raised by an obstruction a neutral zone may be provided by means of pistons acted upon by weak springs situated in bores in the wings or casings. In a modification of this arrangement, parts 4, Fig. 7, having non-return valves 5 are provided in each vane which coacts with a fixed abutment 2. Thus each vane acts in one direction for stabilizing and in the other for shock-absorbing and leakage of fluid is automatically made up. A throttle valve 7 may be fitted to each end of each pipe line 6 or may be fitted to one line only. Alternatively a beveledged piston acted upon by a spring of adjustable tension may be provided in one or both connecting pipes and may be arranged so that little or no resistance is offered to flow in one direction. In further modifications reciprocating pistons contained in two adjacent cylinders, or a single piston with two piston-rods may be used. The space in the casings not formed as a working chamber may be adapted for storing replenishing liquid. Two cylinder casings situated on the same side of the vehicle may be interconnected in order to equalize the load on the springs of the front and back wheels.
