Abstract

928,243. Clamps. CLAIRPOL (MACHINES) Ltd. March 23, 1962 [April 14, 1961], No. 13442/61. Class 44. [Also in Group XXIII] A clamping device for supporting a plurality of articles in side-by-side array for an operation thereon, such as table knife blades for a grinding or polishing operation, comprises a pair of clamping lips 10, 11 supported at longitudinallyspaced intervals from toggle-type clamping means A, B, C, each of which has its toggle means connected to a common actuator 49 for simultaneously moving the lips into and out of clamping relation. The clamping lips 10, 11 have longitudinal rubber gripping strips 10a, 11a on their adjacent faces and are carried by levers 13, 14 which are mounted by pivots 22, 23 on a U-shaped plate 17 having arms 15, 16. The ends of the levers remote from the lips are bifurcated and formed with flanges 27, 28 between which are collars 30. Pivots 29 are disposed within the collars and connected by toggle links 31, 32, 33, 34 to a cruciform-shaped member 35 having flanges for connection to the common actuator 49, in the form of a rod. Spacers 50 with flanged ends 51 maintain the clamping means in spaced relationship. The ends of the rod 49 are provided with necks 52, 53 and heads 52a, 53a for engagement in undercut lodgements 53, 54, Fig. 6, of a holder for the clamping device. The lodgements[extend through brackets 56, 57 on a member 58. Flanges 56a, 57a on the brackets are secured to pneumatic piston-and-cylinder units 59, 60 connected to the lodgements. When the clamping device is mounted in the holder a control valve 67 can be operated so that one or other of the units 59, 60 is actuated to move the rod 49 to change or release the articles held between the lips.
