Abstract

928,165. Etching. DOW CHEMICAL CO. June 2, 1960 [June 12, 1959], No. 19495/60. Class 100 (2). A powderless etching process utilizes an aqueous bath containing (1) a dilute strong acid, (2) a water-immiscible organic fluid, (3) a filming agent, and (4) a film-controlling agent comprising one or more carboxylic acids or their salts. (1) The acid is present in amounts from 30-200 grams/litre, and is generally nitric acid. Small amounts of sulphuric, hydrochloric or acetic acid may be added. (2) The organic fluid is present in amounts from 3-150 grams/litre, and is a hydrocarbon aromatic, B.P. 90- 390‹ C., e.g. ligroin, kerosene, gas oils, diethylbenzenes, tetramethylbenzenes, diisopropylbenzenes, dodecylbenzenes, turpentine, monochlorethylbenzene, ethylbutyl ketone, isophorone, methylhexyl ketone, d-limonene, diisodecyl phthalate or dicapryladipate; in general, esters, ketones, terpenes, ethers, aliphatic, naphthenic and aromatic hydrocarbons are usable. (3) The filming agent is present in amounts from 0.2-20 grams/litre, and examples are petroleum sulphonic acids or salts thereof, sulphonated esters of succinic acid, sulphated fats, oils and waxes, halogenated diaryloxide sulphonates, alkyl benzene sulphonates, alkyl naphthalene sulphonates, or sulphonated esters, amides and ethers. (4) The film-controlling agent is present in amounts from 0.05-3 grams/litre, and may be sodium benzoate, adipic acid, maleic acid, succinic acid, pimelic acid, stearic acid, azelaic acid, arachidic acid, behenic acid, cetoleic acid, caprylic acid, capric acid, lauric acid, linolic acid, myristic acid, oleic acid, palmitic acid, ricinoleic acid or suberic acid. Specifications 703,814, 709,315, 725,110, 818,744, 928,164 and 928,166 are referred to.
