Abstract
928,067. Marking packages; type-wheel machines. ADOLPH GOTTSCHO Inc. Nov. 14, 1961 [Nov. 16, 1900], No. 40646/61. Classes 100 (2) and 100 (4). Packages A, Fig. 1, to be marked are fed by an endless-band conveyer 18 having pushers 24 along a table 18 in front of continuously rotating vertically mounted marking assemblies 70 each of which carries a plurality of marking elements 84, Figs. 3, 8, from which assembly one element is caused to protrude between parallel guide rails 34 to contact the packages. The elements 84 are stacked vertically and slidably in a frame, comprising upper and lower members 72, 74 and grooved side bars 80, which is mounted on a shaft 58 rotatable through sprockets and chains 164, 178, 180 and an adjustable clamp and pin arrangement 162, 166, Fig. 3, from the conveyer drive in synchronism with the package movement. The elements are normally biased by springs 94 secured to their inner edge away from a printing position but that element opposite the space between the guide rails 34 is projected forwardly into the space by a spring-loaded pusher member 146, Fig. 6, which is mounted in a Y-shaped body 94 fixedly secured to the shaft 58 through a grubscrew 142 and embracing the frame carrying the elements 84 such that rotation of the frame derives from the attachment of the body 94 to the shaft. The frame is slidable axially of the shaft a roller 150, Fig. 7, carried by the member 146 constantly urging the element 84 in horizontal alignment therewith into the space between the rails 34. Axial adjustment of the frame is effected by a framework 102, 110, 104, Fig. 3, which is slidable along the shaft 58 by actuating in a vertical direction a knob 112 resiliently attached to the framework by a bolt and spring arrangement 114, 118, Fig. 4. The bolt is slidable vertically in a slot 124 formed in a vertical bar 46 attached to the rear of the framework 30, 32 in which the marking assemblies 70 are mounted. The bar also includes a number of apertures 130 each corresponding to the positioning of an element in alignment with the pusher member, a pin 128 on the knob 112 being located in an aperture when the selected element is in alignment with the pusher member 146 so locking the framework 102, 110, 104 and thus the associated marking assembly against vertical displacement. The protruding, and thus operative, element, such as 84<SP>1</SP>, is inked by an assembly including a housing 190, Figs. 6, 12, a rubber or felt covered ink transfer roller 214, an inking roller 218 and an inking dish-shaped member 246 which is rotatable about a horizontal axis, dips below the level of ink in the housing and has a serrated edge in contact with the inking roller 218 such that it is rotated thereby thus transferring ink from the pool thereof to the roller 218. Wiper blades 256 contact the upper and lower surfaces of the roller 218. The inking rollers are driven from the shaft 58 through gearing 212, 210 a shaft 200, pin-and-slot connection 206, 208 and a shaft 194 protruding upwardly through the housing 190. The roller 214 is fixedly mounted on the shaft 194, the roller 218, which is in contact with roller 214, being driven by gearing 226 and 228 and pin-and-slot connections 234 and 236, Fig. 4.
