In a fitting of the type comprising a mainly opaque enclosure for an electric lamp of bulbous shape e.g. an incandescent filament lamp in which the lower part of the enclosure consists of a hollow skirt, part at least of the inner surface of the skirt is lined with one or more strips of flexible material the inwardly directed surface of which is highly absorbent of incident light and is formed with a plurality of parallel ridges in planes at right angles to the axis of the skirt and so arranged that the greater part of the surface of the strip which is observable from below the fitting is shielded against receiving light directly from the lamp. The strips may be made of rubber, neoprene or polyvinyl chloride and may be formed by extrusion, cut to length and secured in place by adhesive. In the form shown, the fitting comprises a casing 1 having an aperture 2 at the top above which is a stirrup 3 supporting a plate 4 carrying the socket 5 for the lamp 6. A skirt 10 is secured to the bottom of the casing 1 and mounted in an aperture in a ceiling 14. A reflector 8 surrounds the lamp 6. The skirt is lined with a strip 17 of neoprene having triangular ridges 18, the upper surfaces of which are horizontal and the lower surfaces inclined at 40 degrees to the horizontal. In a modification, the lamp is mounted in a bell-shaped reflector having a narrow upper portion for enclosing the lampholder and a cylindrical skirt extending from the lower edge and lined with a strip of polyvinyl chloride, the inner surface of which is formed with triangular ridges the upper and lower surfaces each being inclined at 15 degrees to the horizontal. The skirt is mounted in an aperture in a ceiling by means of mounting clamps as described in Specification 928,004.
