Abstract

A thermally responsive laminated metal, through which current flows to heat it, the resulting deflection operating an overload cut-out switch, consists of relatively low and high expansion laminations and a third lamination of low electrical resistivity, the relative thicknesses of the laminations being proportioned to give maximum deflection per unit thickness of the metal per degree change in temperature. Suitable materials for the laminations are:- Low electrical resistivity lamination.-At least 95% copper (preferably 99%), balance cadmium or silver. Low expansion lamination.-From 34 to 50% nickel (preferably 36%), balance iron. High expansion lamination.-From 15 to 35% nickel (preferably 22%), from 1 to 20% chromium (preferably 3%), balance iron; 72% manganese, 18% copper, balance nickel. The laminations are diffusion welded together over their opposed surfaces. If the low resistivity lamination be largely of copper, then a very thin layer of a diffusion augmenting alloy is used between opposed surfaces and is composed of from 70 to 95% copper (preferred 85%), balance manganese. U.S.A. Specification 2,240,824 is referred to.
