In a reactor moderated by graphite and H 2 O and comprising graphite traversed by passages for H 2 O coolant, the amount of fertile and fissionable fuel is such that the reactor is undermoderated with respect to graphite alone and the reactor is controlled by the rate of supply of coolant-moderator. The reactor is designed so that the addition of excess water cannot cause prompt criticality. Fig. 1 shows a hightemperature reactor in which heat is transferred from fuel at 12 to coolant passages 14 by radiation; operation at temperatures around 3000‹ C. ensures rapid removal by resonance fissioning of any Pu formed. Uncontrolled fissioning of accumulated plutonium is thus prevented. Header 22 provides a constant flow of H 2 O much greater than can be evaporated and sufficient to make the reactor critical. Header 26 provides an adjustable flow for control; increases in reactivity are immediately offset by loss of moderation through increased evaporation. Saturated steam is produced which is dried and superheated in other passages 37. Passages 14 contain helical baffles.
