Abstract

1,174,796. Controlling reactors. REACTOR CENTRUM NEDERLAND. 30 March, 1967 [31 March, 1966], No. 14616/67. Heading G6C. In a wet-steam cooled epithermal or fast reactor an abnormal increase in reactivity, caused by an increase in the volume of water in the core, is prevented by a resonance neutronabsorbing material incorporated in the fuel material. The added material is a thermal and/or epithermal absorber and the fast or epithermal neutrons are moderated by the water to an energy level at which absorption occurs. The entry of water into the bore tends to raise the reactivity by reducing the neutron leakage. Steam and water are admitted at the apertures 10 and 16 respectively. The water flows upwards over heat shield and downwards into chamber 24 where it enters the atomizer pipes, 5 with the steam from chest 9. The wet steam flows upwards through the pipes 2 containing the fissile elements. The heated steam leaves the pressure vessel through aperture 18. The upper end of each tube 2 is supported resiliently. The added absorber may be boron, godolinium, samarium, hafnium or dysprosium.
