A releasable safety device, for the protection of an occupant of a road or like vehicle, is mounted on a bracket fixed to the vehicle or to the underside of a car roof 2 and comprises, a spring supported padded head covering 6 and a plurality of telescopic metal or plastic rings 1 which may be released from the retracted Fig. 1b position to drop down and partly cover the occupant. The release is effected by electrical or mechanical means operated either automatically on collision or by the occupant. A ring 7 supports the rings 1 in the retracted position and eye holes 4 are provided. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown) the device comprises a telescopic head piece in addition, and in another embodiment the apparatus comprises a telescopic helmet with chest and back protectors attached.
