Abstract

Hydroxy-polyamides are prepared by condensing a mixture of three components, one component being a compound or mixture of compounds selected from hydraxine, organic diamines and polyalkylene polyamines, the second component being a dibasic organic carboxylic acid or acid anhydride or a mixture of such acids and/or anhydrides, the third component being a monoalkanolamine or mixture of monoalkanolamines, in a molar ratio of 1:2:2 with respect to said first, second and third components at a sufficiently high temperature to maintain homogeneity while stirring continuously, the water formed during the reaction being continuously removed as the reaction proceeds. The condensation products may be converted to their mono-esters by treatment with one equivalent of an organic monocarboxylic acid. Many starting materials are specified and in the examples products are obtained which have fibre-forming properties or resemble waxes or greases.ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of the following general formulae HO-R1-NH.CO-R3-CO.NH-NH.CO-R4-CO.NH -R2-OH HO-R1-NH.CO-R3-CO.NH-R-NH.CO-R4-CO.NH -R2-OH HO-R1-NH.CO-R3-CO.NH-NH.CO-R4-CO.NH -R2-O.CO-R5 HO-R1-NH.CO-R3-CO.NH-R-NH.CO-R4-CO.NH -R2-O.CO-R5 wherein R1 and R2 are identical or different aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals, R3 and R4 are identical or different hydrocarbon radicals, R is a hydrocarbon radical or a hydrocarbon radical containing at least one -NH- substituent linking two alkylene radicals, and R5 is a hydrocarbon radical which may be substituted by a hydroxyl group, and the preparation of such compounds and of hydroxy- and esterified hydroxy-polyamides generally by reacting together in the molar ratio of 1:2:2 a compound or mixture of compounds from each of the following groups: (a) hydrazine, organic diamines or polyalkylene polyamines; (b) organic dibasic carboxylic acids or acid anhydrides; (c) mono-alkanolamines, at a sufficiently high temperature to maintain homogeneity, in the presence or absence of an inert gas, the water formed during the reaction being continuously removed, the product being optionally subsequently esterified with 1 mole of an organic monocarboxylic acid. Many suitable starting materials are specified and examples describe the preparation of products according to the invention.
