Abstract
<PICT:0926591/IV(a)/1> Relates to a new antibiotic AA368, alternatively designated Venturicidin, which has the elementary analysis C 64.89%, H 8.95% and N 1.75%, a specific rotation of [a ]20D + 114 DEG (c, 1% in chloroform) and which is soluble in butanol, ethyl acetate and chloroform, has an ultra-violet spectrum showing peaks at 280mm and 200mm , an infra-red absorption spectrum as shown and a melting point (uncorrected) of 140-142 DEG C. following recrystallization from ethyl acetate/petroleum ether (1:3 by volume). The antibiotic may be produced by culturing an AA368-producing species of the genus streptomyces, such as Streptomyces NCIB 9198, 9199 or 9200, on or in a nutrient medium therefor under aerobic conditions and thereafter recovering the antibiotic thus produced from the culture broth, e.g. by filtering the mycelium from the broth and extracting the antibiotic from the mycelium with an organic solvent therefor, such as acetone, butanol, and ethyl, butyl or amyl acetate.ALSO:Fungicidal compositions comprise aqueous solutions containing antibiotic AA368, alternatively designated Venturicidin (see Group IV (b)), ethylene glycol monoethyl ether and a non-ionic surface-active agent with octyl phenol as hydrophobic group in combination with a polyoxyethylene chain.
