Abstract
926,579. Lubricating valves. ROTORK ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. June 30, 1960 [July 2, 1959; Sept. 24, 1959], Nos. 22799/59 and 32528/59. Class 12 (3). [Also in Group XXIX] A valve lubricator comprises means for supplying lubricant to the relatively movable parts of the valve, said means being actuated by a device responsive to resistance to movements of the parts. A valve spindle 17, Fig. 1, is driven from a reversible motor 10 by a worm and wheel 16, 15, and a spring-urged lever 20 pivotable on the worm shaft 12, actuates torque limit switches 25 to de-energize the motor after the valve is tightened. If the valve sticks prior to the switches 25 being actuated, a piston 27 connected to the bifurcated end 26 of the lever 20 is moved in a cylinder 29 to supply oil from a reservoir 30, through non-return valves 32 and adjustable valves 36, into conduits 40, and thence to the parts of the valve to be lubricated via a conduit 35, thus freeing the valve. In a modification, Fig. 2, the worm shaft 12 is located in a housing 42, and oil is supplied from a reservoir 50 to the bore 44 of the housing. The valve spindle 17 rotates until the valve sticks, whereupon the shaft 12 moves axially to force oil through a conduit 52 to the moving parts to be lubricated. If the lubricant is not sufficient to release the valve, the thrust on the shaft 12 is transmitted to a spring-urged plunger 45 which actuates a motor switch 47. In a further modification, Fig. 4, a motor 71 drives a pump 72 which supplies oil to the valve parts via a slide valve 75. The circuit is normally closed by a portion 82 on the worm shaft 74, but when the shaft moves axially due to sticking of the valve to be lubricated, a reduced portion 80, or 81, opens the circuit. Further movement of the shaft trips a motor switch 79. A manuallyoperated lubricator for use on small bore valves, Figs. 5, 6, comprises a handle 87 rotatable on a lever 88 keyed to the valve spindle 89. An oil reservoir 90, integral with the handle supplies oil to both sides of a piston 94, the rod 95 of which engages a fork 97 on the lever 88. The valve spindle is rotated by the handle 87, but if the valve is stiff the piston is moved and oil passes into a flexible pipe 102, past an adjustable valve 98, and thence to a conduit 103 which communicates with the moving parts of the valve. In a still further modification, worm 57, Fig. 3, is driven through a second stage reduction 55, and is connected to a doubleacting pump 62. Lubricant is supplied to the valve from a reservoir 63 through valves 66, 68 and conduit 69, 70.
