Abstract

926,407. Open-mesh metal flooring; gratings. R. BARR. Feb. 24, 1962, No. 7296/62. Classes 20 (4) and 107. [Also in Group XXII] A structural element for open-mesh industrial flooring consists of two sets of bars, one set of longitudinal bars 10 being formed with slots 11 on their upper edges which are narrower at the top and the other set of transverse bars 20 being shaped to be insertable into the slots but being initially of greater depth so that when pressed home their greater depth is forced out to fill up the wider part in the slots and thereby secure the whole together in a permanent manner. The transverse bars 20 have parallel sided slots 21 cut in their lower edges. The longitudinal bars are stronger than the transverse bars. The bars are assembled, as shown in Fig. 4, and the assembly is placed in a press and the transverse bars are forced downwardly so that their excess height at the points of intersection is absorbed by distortion as the material of the bar flows into the dove-tailed portion of the slots 11. The margins of the structure are formed by longitudinal bars 30 and transverse bars 40 similarly jointed to the bars 10 and 20. The bottom of each dove-tailed slot is above the neutral axis of the longitudinal bars giving full sectional strength and the bottom edge of each transverse bar is below the neutral axis of the longitudinal bars which act as struts giving lateral strength and rigidity in a lattice girder effect.
