Abstract

926,366. Preventing corrosion; generating combustion products under pressure. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Nov. 14, 1960 [Jan. 12, 1960], No. 39007/60. Drawings to Specification. Class 51 (1). [Also in Group XXVI] Corrosion and incrustation of the blades of a gas turbine due to the use of vanadium-containing oil fuel is prevented by feeding a rod or tube comprising two materials into the combustion chamber at a rate controlled in accordance with the operation of the turbine. One of the materials, which may be magnesium, beryllium, calcium, barium, strontium or zinc or the oxide, sulphate, carbonate, chloride or hydroxide of one of these metals, prevents the formation of corrosive vanadates, while the other material, which may be aluminium, chromium, iron, manganese, silicon, boron, titanium, zirconium, molybdenum, or tungsten prevents the formation of an unduly thick coating on the turbine blades. The rod may comprise an alloy of the materials used, be formed as a bimetallic strip, or comprise comminuted materials bonded together by an agent such as a plastic resin. In another embodiment aluminium or other suitable metallic tubing is filled with comminuted magnesium oxide or another suitable substance. The rate of feed of the rod or tube is controlled in accordance with the temperature at the outlet of the combustion chamber and the pressure of the fuel feed by a variable speed drive motor, or the rate may be controlled in accordance with the speed of turbine shaft or air supply pressure.
