Abstract

Copper is removed from copper bearing lead by treating the molten bullion by introducing free or combined sulphur (i.e. elemental sulphur or iron or lead sulphides or mixtures thereof) below the surface of the melt which is maintained at such a temperature that at least part of the compounds formed is molten, e.g. 800-850 DEG C. The starting material may be lead contaminated by copper or copper matte containing a lot of lead but the original copper content should be at least 1.0%.
