Abstract

925,671. Applying adhesive tape. COW & GATE Ltd., and G. K. CHARLES. June 25, 1959 [June 25, 1958], No. 20452/58. Class 73. A tabbing device for a taping machine which applies tape 3 from a spool 4 around a container (not shown), comprises a guide-surface 2 arranged to engage the non-adhesive face of the tape to guide it through the device towards the container, means 12 to press a free end of a continuous length of tab-tape stored on a spool 14 against a part of the adhesive face of the tape on the guide surface 2, the pressure means 12 and the guide surface 2 being separable from one another to release pressure between the tab-tape and the adhesive tape, the arrangement being such that separation of the means 12 from the surface 2 also effects cutting engagement between severing means 10 and the tab-tape to sever the part of it adhering to the adhesive tape whereby the adhesive tape with a tab is applied to the container. The surface 2 is part of a rubber roller rotatable about a spindle 11 on a triangular member 6 which is pivoted at 5 to the baseplate 1 of the device to which the pressureroller 12 is also pivoted at 16. The tab-tape is held on to the roller 12 by a spring 15. An arm 17, spring-loaded at 21, is pivoted to the underside of the plate 1 at 18 and has a lateral extension 19 which protrudes up through an arcuate slot 20. With the taping machine at rest the extension 19 is held by the spring 21 against the left-hand end of the slot 20 (Fig. 1), where, by pressing against the guide surface of roller 2, it holds the adhesive tape on the latter against the tab-tape on the presser roller 12. On application, movement of the tape 3 in the direction of the arrows rotates the roller 2 which frictionally causes the extension 19 to move to the other end of the slot 20 against the spring 21. The tension in the tape causes the member 6 to pivot away from the pressure roller 12, disengaging the adhesive tape from the latter and bringing up the knife 10 to cut-off the end of the tab-tape. As long as the application of the tape continues, a cam-surface 7 on the member 6 holds the extension 19 at the right-hand end of the slot 20. On removal of the tension from the adhesive tape 3 the extension returns to the other end of the slot. Fig. 3 shows another embodiment in which the guide-surface roller pivot 23 is fixed whilst the pressure-roller 28, carrying tab-tape 13 is on an arm pivoted at 25 and is moved into and out of contact with the adhesive tape on the guide roller 23 against a spring 34 by a solenoid 33. A knife 35 is fixed in a position where it will sever the adhered end of the tab-tape when the roller 28 is released from the roller 22. The solenoid is actuated at the correct instant by photo-cells operated by registration marks on the tape (not shown). Movement of the roller 28 by pneumatic or mechanical means is also claimed. Specification 574,156 is referred to.
