Abstract
925,666. Axial rolling. R. C. CLERK. Feb. 26, 1962 [Feb. 3, 1961], No. 4235/61. Class 83 (4). A rack for rolling gear teeth on bars or blanks has a set of forming teeth which make initial contact with the work, the teeth of the set being substantially identical and having radiused tips. The racks are used in pairs, meshing on diametrically opposed portions of the workpiece. The rack may be in a single length, but is preferably built of a number of sections A-B, B-C, ... L-M, bolted together longitudinally. The first section A-B, is a gauging section; section B-C is used for initial indenting and has concave flanks to its teeth (Fig. 3, not shown); sections C-D, D-E, &c. have teeth of differing pitch and dimensions which successively form the the gear teeth. Sections H-K and K-L give rise to little change in profile of the gear teeth, their main function being to improve the surface finish. The final section L-M is a section over which the forming pressure exerted on the work by the racks is progressively reduced, thus enabling the machine to be unloaded without shock. Co-ordination between the two forming racks may be achieved by means of a looselymeshed idler gear running between a pair of parallel racks, other than the forming racks.
