Abstract

925,492. Forming metal fibres. ARMOUR RESEARCH FOUNDATION OF ILLINOIS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY. July 7, 1961 [July 13, 1960], No. 24706/61. Class 41. Metal fibres are formed by electrolysis of metal salt solutions to deposit metal fibres on conductive metal discs 12, alternating with non- conductive dielectric discs 13 mounted on a rotating shaft. Anodes 15 are mounted in the electrolyte which may contain salts of nickel iron, copper, zinc or mixtures thereof, deposited as metal or alloy in wire or ribbon form on the periphery of discs 12 from which it is removed by doctor blade 14 scraping the discs when exposed above the solution at the crest of rotation. The thickness of the deposit may be adjusted by the speed of rotation of the disc assembly and the current density. Preferably the voltage is maintained constant and the velocity of rotation varied to give a fibre of equal thickness and width.
