Abstract

925,442. Storing liquefied gases; pipe couplings. R. H. HAHN, and H. V. FRENCH. Nov. 30, 1959, No. 40622/59. Classes 8(2) and 99(1). A valve for an oxygen supply tank comprises a housing having an inner, central and outer chambers X, Y, Z, Fig. 3. The inner chamber X is provided with a gas inlet port 32, a gas outlet port 28 and a by-pass port 36 providing communication with the central chamber Y which has a vent port 29. The ports 32, 36 are provided with seatings 34, 37 for a valve member 70 which is loaded by a spring 75 to normally close the by-pass port 36. A counter-bore 73 of the valve member receives a spindle 76 which extends into the outer chamber Z and contacts a second spindle 66 which extends to the outside of the housing, passing through a hollow stem 62 of a valve member 60 which normally closes a fill port of the outer chamber Z. The outer chamber Z is also provided with a flowport 30 leading to the bottom of the supply tank and bellow members 80, 81 attached to the housing and a head 70 of the spindle 66 provide a sealing means and a loading for the valve 60 whose stem 62 is provided with radial vanes 67. An end member 91 is mounted on the end of the housing and normally receives a cap attached through a bayonet connection to prevent actuation of the valves. With the valves in the position shown, the valve 70 allows vapour to flow to the top of the oxygen tank to provide pressure to dispense the liquid oxygen to the point of use. When it is desired to fill the oxygen supply tank, a supply pipe provided with a valve 111 is attached to the valve housing and the valve first acts through the spindle 66, 76 to move the valve 70 to close the port 32 and open the by-pass port 36 thus venting the supply tank and the valve 111 is then opened whereby the liquid supply flowing through the pipe opens the valve 60 and flows to the container through port 30. When it is desired to drain the oxygen container, the cap 98 is removed and a pipe is coupled to the valve containing a valve 111<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 5, provided with a bore 115 which receives the spindle 66. The stem 109<SP>1</SP> of the valve opens the valve 62 and also the valve 111<SP>1</SP> and the liquid oxygen is forced through the pipe.
