Abstract
Scarlet enamels are made by milling a pigment consisting of the trans-isomer of the condensation product of 1:4:5:8-naphthalene-tetracarboxylic acid and o-phenylene-diamine, 3:4-diaminotoluene or 3:4-diamino-chlorobenzene with a 50% xylene solution of a coconut oil alkyd resin, mixing the paste obtained with additional alkyd resin in xylene and a xylenetoluene-butanol solution of a melamine-formaldehyde resin. This enamel may be mixed with a white enamel containing the two resins mentioned above and titanium dioxide.ALSO:Naphthalene-tetracarboxylic acid-bis-(imidazole) pigments are made by condensing 1:4:5:8naphthalene-tetracarboxylic acid with o-phenylene-diamine, 3:4-diamino-toluene or 3:4-diamino-chlorobenzene, forming the potassium salts of the mixture of cis- and trans-isomers so obtained, separating the water-insoluble trans-isomer salt from the water-soluble cisisomer salt, hydrolysing the trans-isomer salt in water at 75 DEG C. to about 100 DEG C. for one to two hours and separating the pigment so obtained. Examples are given. The pigments colour lacquers and enamels in scarlet shades.
