Abstract

925,359. Impregnated paper. DOMINION TAR & CHEMICAL CO. Ltd. April 20, 1961 [April 21, 1960], No. 13973/60. Class 96. [Also in Group XXVIII] A moulded or otherwise formed pipe or tube is of fibrous material impregnated with molten sulphur. The material may be paper, wood, asbestos or glass fibres or rock wool, and the amount of sulphur may be from 50 to 500% of the weight of the fibrous material, but, preferably, is 200 to 400%. The pipe may, additionally, be coated with a resinous or bituminous material. Sulphur, placed in a tank 4 and heated by a steam heating coil 7, is circulated by a pump 8 into a vessel 1 containing a "white" fibrous pipe and subjected to a vacuum by means of a pump 9. The vacuum is released and impregnation of the pipe proceeds under atmospheric pressure, the sulphur being finally pumped back to the tank 4. The impregnation cycle may be repeated until complete penetration of the sulphur throughout the fibrous pipe.
