Abstract

925,220. Surgical drills. D. B. HORNER. Feb. 20, 1962 [Feb. 20, 1961], No. 6566/62. Class 81 (2). [Also in Group XXII] A battery-driven surgical drill is sealed so as to be explosion-proof and to be able to be sterilized in an autoclave. It also has provision for rotating the output shaft manually without turning the driving mechanism. The battery 53 is housed in a pistol-grip handle 11 and is connected to the motor 16 through a trigger-actuated micro-switch 70. A gear-wheel 34 on the motor shaft drives the main shaft 15 through a wedging roller type of one-way clutch 37 and an output shaft 81 having any suitable means for carrying a tool 89, is fitted on to splines 79 on the end of the shaft 15. If the drill jams in use or if the driving mechanism should fail, the output shaft may be rotated manually by a handle 49 having a square spigot 50 for engaging a corresponding recess in the projecting end of the shaft 15. In order to avoid the possibility of igniting anaesthetic or other explosive gases, the projecting ends of the shafts 15, 81 are sealed by compressed packing rings 23, 86 respectively and seals are also placed around the switch 70 and battery cover 54.
