Abstract
Dry cleaning compositions comprise (a) a solvent such as benzine, carbon tetrachloride, methylene chloride, tri- and perchlorethylene, and methyl chloroform, and (b) an intensifier of general formula <FORM:0925138/III/1> wherein Z is 2 or 3, y is 0-8, Ra, Rb and Rc together contain at least 8 carbon atoms, at least one of these groups being a C1-30-alkyl group and those others which are not such alkyl groups being hydrogen, halogen, hydroxyl or a C1-3-alkoxy group, R1 is an aromatic group of not more than 10 carbon atoms, R11 is -CH2-, -CO-CH=CH,- or -CO-C6H4-, and Me is hydrogen or a solvent-soluble salt-forming cation, e.g. alkali or alkaline earth metal, aluminium or the cation of a C1-6-aliphatic amine, especially an ethanolamine; the use of the compounds defined in Specification 893,296 is however disclaimed. Intensifier (b), of which the preferred example is the compound of formula <FORM:0925138/III/2> is usually present in amounts of 0,5-50, preferably 3-30, g/b., and the dry-cleaning bath generally also contains such a quantity of water, added before or during the cleaning operations, that the textile material, when immersed, will absorb the same amount of water as it would in an atmosphere of 70-90% R.H. The bath may also contain C1-18-saturated aliphatic alcohols and ethanolamides of C12-18-fatty acids.ALSO:As a prior step to rendering clothing waterrepellent, the clothing is dry-cleaned with a solvent containing an intensifier of general formula <FORM:0925138/IV(a)/1> wherein z is 2 or 3, y is 0-8, Ra, Rb and Rc together contain at least 8 carbon atoms at least one of these groups being a C1-30-alkyl group and those others which are not such alkyl groups being hydrogen, halogen, hydroxyl or a C1-3-alkoxy group, R1 is an aromatic group of not more than 10 carbon atoms, R11 is -CH2-, -CO-CH=CH-, or -CO-C6H4-, and Me is hydrogen or a solvent-soluble salt-forming cation, e.g. alkali or alkaline earth metal, aluminium, or the cation of a C1-6-aliphatic amine; the use of the compounds defined in Specification 893,296 is however disclaimed (see Group III). The clothing may be of wool, cotton, regenerated cellulose, leather, polyamide, polyester, polyacrylonitrile, or cellulose acetate with aluminium, zirconium, titanium or siloxane compounds, and especially with a 2:1 mixture of aluminium diethylate monostearate and Indonesian paraffin wax in perchlorethylene. The solvent may be benzine, carbon tetrachloride, methylene chloride, triand per-chlorethylene or methyl chloroform.
