Abstract
924,834. Vehicles supported by gaseous cushions. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Jan. 13, 1961 [Jan. 25, 1960], No. 1492/61. Class 4. A vehicle supported from the ground by a cushion of air comprises a platform 2 having beneath it a vented flexible diaphragm 12 of an area greater than that of the platform and hermetically attached at its outer periphery 14 to the platform. The diaphragm is made of an ethylene glycol terephthalic acid polyester and has an opening 18 defined by a bead 20 enclosing a metal ring 22. A blower 6 on the platform discharges air into the space 30 enclosed by the diaphragm and into a plenum chamber 32 formed between the diaphragm and the ground. The spacing of the opening 18 from the platform is controllable by a knob 28 on a shaft 26 on which is wound a cable 24 attached to a cross bar on ring 22, to vary the amount of air passing into the space 30. The blower is driven by a petrol engine, electric motor, or other prime mover, and on starting, first inflates space 30, lifting the platform clear of the ground, and then forms the air cushion beneath the diaphragm. The diaphragm deforms when obstacles are encountered, or to accommodate tilting of the platform under asymmetrical loading, the minimum clearance between the diaphragm and the ground remaining uniform. The blower may deliver air through apertures in the platform spaced laterally from opening 18 e.g. at the diaphragm periphery. The platform may be rectangular, and provided with handles for manual propulsion, though other propulsive means may be used.
