Abstract

924,791. Disc brakes. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 30, 1961 [Nov. 4, 1960], No. 37992/60. Class 103 (1). [Also in Group XXIV] A driving mechanism between a first (driving or driven) member and a shaft comprises a second member fast with the shaft and having a lost-motion connection with the first member, and a third member drivingly connected to the first member and shifted axially upon relative rotation between the first and second members which occurs upon torque reversal between the first member and the shaft. Axial movement of the third member may be used to brake the shaft, or to indicate torque reversal or to increase the power input to the driving member. As applied to a centrifugal hydro-extractor having a basket fast with the shaft which is to be braked upon removal of driving power from the driving member, the first member is the rotor 1 of an electric motor which is freely rotatable on the shaft (not shown) to be driven. Axial pins 5 engage with lost-motion in recesses 6 of the second member 7 which is pinned or keyed to the shaft. Axial pins 8 slidably engage apertures 9 formed in the third member 10, which is freely mounted on the shaft and which lightly frictionally engages a spring-biased non-rotary table 12. The member 7 has projections 14 extending into slots 13 formed between raised inner peripheral portions of the member 10, rollers or balls 15 being housed in the slots 13 and co-operating with inclined portions of the slots. When the rotor 1 drives the shaft the rollers 15 are fully housed in the slots and there is only light engagement between the member 10 and table 12. If the speed of the driving member is reduced and due to its inertia the driven shaft continues to rotate at a higher speed, relative movement between the members 1 and 7 causes the rollers 15 to ride up the inclines and move the member 10 axially to increase the frictional engagement with the table 12 thus providing a braking torque.
