Abstract

Unsaturated polyesters are made by effecting ester-interchange between the monomethyl ester of itaconic acid and one or more glycols, and then polycondensing the resulting glycol ester. The glycol may be ethylene-, propylene- or diethylene-glycol. The reaction mixture may also include a saturated dicarboxylic acid (e.g. adipic acid, isophthalic acid or phthalic anhydride). Catalysts for the reaction are aromatic sulphonic acids; an oxide or borate of lead, magnesium or zinc; or boric anhydride. The polyesters may be copolymerized with vinyl monomers (e.g. styrene) in the presence of a vinyl polymerization catalyst (e.g. benzoyl peroxide or methyl ethyl ketone peroxide) and an accelerator (e.g. a manganese salt or a cobalt salt such as the naphthenate).
