Abstract
924,329. Self-feeding brushes. C. CHARALAMBOUS. Sept. 29, 1961 [May 25, 1961], No. 18931/61. Class 19. A wash brush comprises a hollow handle, an inlet for connection to a water supply, a washing member provided with an outlet or outlets for water and detergent solution, the handle including a manually operable valve and a chamber adapted to contain a detergent solution and communicating with a conduit arranged within the handle and connected to the water supply, the valve being arranged to control the flow of water between the supply and the brush head such that water flows directly to the brush head via the valve or via the detergent chamber and valve to the brush head according to the position of the valve. The washing member may comprise a brush, a flexible diaphragm formed with a plurality of flexible fingers, or a mass of sponge-like material. Fig. 2 shows a hollow handle 1 provided with a push-button valve 17 which is slidable in a valve housing 6 which separates the water supply conduit 5 and detergent chamber 9 from an outlet conduit 7 and detergent outlet chamber 15. An orifice 12 provides communication between conduit 5 and detergent chamber 9. The valve housing 6 has a pair of aligned orifices opposite the conduits 5, 7 and a second pair of aligned orifices 13, 14 opposite the detergent chambers 9, 15. The push-button 17 is biased by a spring 18 to a position in which a transverse bore 20 therein is aligned with the conduits 5, 7. Depression of the push-button against the bias of the spring 18 aligns the bore 20 with the orifices 13, 14. In a modification, Fig. 8, the valve housing 44 divides the detergent chamber 45 and water conduit 48 from the outlet chamber 46. The conduit 48 communicates with the chamber 45 via an orifice 49 and with the interior of the valve housing 44 via orifice 51. A further orifice 52 is formed in the housing 44 in alignment with the orifice 51 and communicates with the outer chamber 46. Aligned orifices 53, 54 provided in the upper portion of the housing 44 communicate with the detergent chamber and outlet tube 55 which leads to a single outlet 57 formed in the centre of the wash brush 43. The rotatable, frusto-conical valve member 60 is provided with a pair of bores 62, 63 located at right-angles to each other such that in one position of the valve one transverse bore is aligned with the first pair of orifices and in the second position of the valve the other transverse bore is aligned with the second pair of orifices.
