Abstract
Polyvinyl hydroxymethyl ether, the corresponding polyvinyl alcohol of which has a K value between 20 and 90, and which has a degree of etherification of 5 to 100%, is prepared by reacting a solution or suspension of polyvinyl alcohol in an aqueous, organic or mixed aqueous-organic medium with formaldehyde at an elevated temperature at a pH of 6,5 to 9. The polyvinyl alcohol may be partially esterified with fatty acid radicals, e.g. formyl, acetyl or propionyl radicals, or partially etherified with alkyl groups, e.g. methyl, ethyl or propyl groups. Specified organic media are methanol, ethanol, butanol, dimethyl formamide, N-methyl pyrrolidone, dimethyl sulphoxide, dioxane and acetone. The formaldehyde may be in the gaseous or dissolved state, or may be derived from a compound which yields formaldehyde, e.g. paraformaldehyde or trioxane. The products swell and dissolve in water, and may be rendered water-insoluble by treatment with a mineral acid. The products may be made into filaments and sheets, and, as they slowly release formaldehyde, are disinfectants.
