Abstract

923,983. Felt-needling machines. WILLIAM BYWATER Ltd., and B. O'BYRNE. Jan. 29, 1962 [Oct. 29, 1960], No. 37252/60. Class 42 (2). The needle arm 62 supporting the needle board 58 of a needle-punching machine is carried by vertical slide pillars 66 which are supported and guided from a top beam 1 extending across the machine and are operatively connected to mechanism for the vertical reciprocation thereof. A paper-maker's endless woven felt to be heated passes around feed and draw rollers 46, 47, a bar 59 and rollers 60, 61. The board 58 and the arm 62 may be in two or more sections according to the machine width. The pillars 66 are arranged in pairs, each of which is reciprocated by its own mechanism. Plates 63, 64 secured to flanges 3, 4 of the beam 1 support brackets 65 in which the pillars 66 slide. The weight of the board 58 and the arm 62 is counterbalanced by compression springs 67 extending between bushes 68 secured to the pillars 66 and bushes 69 seated against the lower brackets 65. An eccentric member 70 is secured to a shaft 71 carrying fly wheels 73 and balance weights 74 and is driven by a motor 75 secured to the beam 1. An eccentric block 77 is mounted by a bearing ring 78 around the member 70 and is mounted to slide along rods 84 secured to the brackets 85 on the pillars 66. Rotation of the shaft 71 moves the block 77 both vertically and horizontally, but only the vertical motion is transmitted to the pillars 66 and the arm 62. The shaft 71 may also carry or drive devices to intermittently drive the rollers 46, 47 and other parts of the machine. Specification 923,982 is referred to.
