Abstract

923,925. Anamorphotic systems; periscopes. OPTISCHE INDUSTRIE DE OUDE DELFT N.V. Oct. 21, 1960 [Oct. 22, 1959], No. 36206/60. Class 97 (1). An anamorphosing optical system comprises a wedge-shaped prism whose refracting edge is parallel to the anamorphotic meridian, and a plane reflecting surface which is parallel to the refracting edge of the prism and which is disposed so as to reflect light rays having traversed the prism back into the latter, whereby the prism is traversed twice by the light rays and the optical axis of the system is deviated by the combination of the prism and the reflecting surface through an angle of at least 45 degrees, and described in Specification 923,926. In the periscope shown in Fig. 1, the light is incident on a wedge prism 6 having a reflecting surface so that the light rays traverse the prism twice before entering a further wedge prism 5 and being reflected at 4 into an objective 3 which images the scene on the photo cathode 2 of an infra-red image converter 1, the image on the fluorescent screen of which is reproduced at infinity by a lens 11. The light rays from this lens 11 then traverse a second prism anamorphoser 12, 13 before passing to a binocular telescope having objective lenses 14, 15 and eyepieces 18, 19.
