Abstract

Isoniaziod (isonicotinic and hydrazide) is obtained by the condensation of isonicotinic acid ethyl ester and hydrazine. Ethioniamide (a -ethyl isonicotinic acid thioamide) is obtained by the action of hydrogen sulphide on a -ethyl isonicotinic acid nitrile in the presence of a base such as triethanolamine. An admixture of these two pyridine compounds is used in treating tuberculosis (see Group VI).ALSO:A composition for the treatment of tuberculosis comprises, as the active ingredients, isoniazid and a -ethylisonicotinic acid thioamide (ethioniamide). The composition is advantageously administered orally in the form of tablets which may be covered with a gastro-resistant coating of cellulose acetate phthalate.
