Abstract

Highly purified formaldehyde is obtained by passing formaldehyde vapours containing water through one or more chambers in which they remain for a total time of at least 5 minutes and in which the ratio of contact surfaces to volumetric capacity is below 0.6cm.-1 and in which the formaldehyde vapours are made to pass repeatedly through zones with temperature gradients across them in these chambers. The chambers may have rectangular or spherical boundary surfaces. When more than one chamber is used it is advisable to have the temperature of the first ones higher than that of the later ones. The formaldehyde vapours are generally introduced into the chambers at a temperature of 30-100 DEG C.
