Abstract

923,110. Cooling semi-conductor devices. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Nov. 2, 1961, No. 39283/61. Addition to 921,851. Class 37. Rectifier equipment includes a tank forming a reservoir for fluid into which project one or more fins integral with and extending from one side of a thermally conducting bar-shaped member (heat sink) which has on its other side attachment means for a plurality of rectifiers, these attachment means being accessible from outside the tank. In the embodiment of Figs. 1 (not shown) and 2 a frame of side and end angle members 2 is stuck to the heat sink 1 and held by external bolts and clamping members 14, 15 against the tank wall, gasket 11 preventing oil leakage. A plurality of semi-conductor rectifiers 18 are screwed into the external face of the heat sink which has a fin 7 to which cables or bus-bars may be attached. (The rectifiers are in line along the heat sink and consequently only one can be seen in Fig. 2.) The heat sink, which is also of good electrical conductivity, is preferably made by extrusion, aluminium being a suitable material for the purpose. In other embodiments, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the heat sink is attached to the inside of the tank. One embodiment uses a frame similar to that of Fig. 2 stuck to the heat sink but with its projecting angle parts clamped against the inside of the tank with an insulating member and a gasket between it and the tank wall. Within the tank connecting bus-bars may be attached to the outer members of the heat sink fins. The other embodiment is a variant on the foregoing embodiment in which the frame is replaced by integral shoulders projecting from the heat sink. Fig. 5 shows power conversion equipment consisting of an oil-filled tank 50 on two sides of which are air-filled compartments 51 containing rectifiers (not shown) fixed on several parallel mounted heat sinks 1 of any of the forms described. The compartments 51 may also contain interconnecting bus-bars and protective fuses (not shown). Besides cooling the heat sinks the tank contains a transformer and/or transductor, chokes and other components. The tank itself may be cooled by cooling tubes, by radiators on otherwise unused walls, or by a circulating water pipe in close thermal contact with the tank walls.
